Photographers Comment: This
is a large site and it offers a view of a Roman fort and its civil settlement.
The excavated areas show the Commanding Officers residence, the Headquarters
building, a civil settlement with granary and two bath houses from different
periods. There is also a full size reconstruction of a section of Hadrian's
Wall, with turret. The reconstruction of the Wall offering an aerial perspective
over the excavations. This part of the site is on the top of a hill.
From here you walk down in a valley with a small
river running through it and here is a museum which houses many of the finds
from the excavations done here including armour, shoes, wooden objects,
textiles, glass, pottery, ironwork, inscriptions, sculptures and many little
finds. This is organised and displayed in a network of rooms in the museum
building, next to the cafe. Within the gardens there are also reconstructions of
a temple, a Roman shop and house, a roman cemetery and replica alters and
tombstone (the originals now being at Chester's Museum).
The greatest find at vindolanda has been the
wooden writing tables which provide information on the life of those that lived
here. They include letters from senior officers and their wives, reports of
military activities, lists and communications covering food, supplies, clothing
and so much more. |
