Housesteads Roman Fort

Photographers Comment: Housesteads is said to be the best preserved Roman Fort in Britain and there is a lot to see, with much of the outer walls still visible and there are a number of buildings in relative proximity to each other, so in some photos it is difficult to distinguish one building from another unless there is something obvious to point out what it might be, for example the Hypocaust in the Commanding officers building, the Granaries, and the gateways.

Once you have explored the remains, it is worth a walk west to Milecastle 37. You get to walk along a cliff edge and the views are stunning, as you can see from some of images in this gallery.

Housesteads is on top of a hill with steep valley's on either side. The pay and display car park and shop are at the bottom of the hill. They have provided a solid path which meanders up the hill and is long and drawn out which may be difficult for some, this takes you to the ticket office and museum. From here there is a further climb to the entrance, but now it is all on grass.
